A7: Footwear — Visual Reference Collection
Introduction
Footwear evidence from the Hallstatt period (Ha C-D, ~800-450 BC) comes from three main sources: preserved leather shoes from the salt mines at Hallstatt and Durrnberg bei Hallein, gold appliques that decorated elite shoes in princely burials (notably Hochdorf), and iconographic depictions in situla art. The salt mine shoes are among the most remarkable organic finds from prehistoric Europe, preserved by the salt-saturated, airless environment of the mines. They are typically made from single pieces of untanned cowhide, shaped around the foot and stitched or laced at the instep. The NHM Wien holds the principal collection from Hallstatt, while the Keltenmuseum Hallein houses Durrnberg material. The study of archaeological footwear (calceology) provides a framework for understanding these finds in the broader context of prehistoric shoe-making traditions across Europe.
1. Hallstatt Salt Mine Leather Shoes (NHM Wien)
The Hallstatt salt mine has yielded multiple leather shoes preserved by the salt environment, dating from the Late Bronze Age through the Iron Age. Six shoes have been documented, with four corresponding to European sizes 31/32 and 34/35, suggesting use by children or small women. Wear patterns around the foot arches are consistent with climbing ladders and steps within the mine.

2. Durrnberg bei Hallein Leather Finds
The Durrnberg salt mine near Hallein has also produced preserved organic material, including leather shoe fragments. A 2023 discovery of a remarkably well-preserved child’s shoe drew international attention.

4. Situla Art Evidence for Footwear
Situla art scenes occasionally depict footwear on human figures, though the level of detail varies. Some figures appear barefoot, while others show pointed or turned-up shoes, and some wear what appear to be boots or wrapped leg coverings extending to the foot.

Gaps and Notes
- Scarcity of visual references: Hallstatt footwear is a notably sparse domain for visual references. Only a handful of preserved shoes exist, and they are concentrated in the NHM Wien collection. The Sketchfab 3D model of the leather shoe (NHMW-PRAE-89.085) is the single best publicly accessible visual reference for Hallstatt mine footwear.
- Individual NHM Wien object pages for other shoes (beyond the one 3D-modelled example) did not surface in searches. The NHM object database (objekte.nhm-wien.ac.at) may contain additional entries but these did not appear in web search results.
- The Keltenmuseum Hallein does not appear to have a publicly searchable online collection database with direct image links for Durrnberg leather finds.
- Situla art depictions of footwear are present but at small scale and low detail, making them supplementary rather than primary evidence.
- No photographs of the Hochdorf shoe leather itself were found (it did not survive); only the gold foil appliques remain.
- The Salzwelten museum (salzwelten.at) did not yield specific footwear object pages through search.
- Re-enactment reconstructions of Hallstatt-period footwear exist but were not prioritised per the source hierarchy instructions, as provenance and sourcing documentation was generally absent.
