B2: Woodworking and Carpentry Tools — Visual Reference Collection
Context
Woodworking tools are among the most important but underrepresented artifact classes in the Hallstatt culture. Axes (Beile), adzes (Dechsel), chisels (Meißel), gouges, saws, and drawknives appear both as grave deposits and as functional tools preserved in the Hallstatt salt mines. The transition from bronze to iron tool types is a defining feature of the Ha C-D period (~800-450 BC). Bronze socketed axes (Tüllenbeile) and winged axes (Lappenbeile) of the late Urnfield/early Hallstatt period are gradually supplemented and then replaced by iron equivalents. Hafting techniques are well documented thanks to the exceptional organic preservation at Hallstatt, where complete wooden handles survive. Key typological references include the Prähistorische Bronzefunde (PBF) series for bronze axes, and more recent work on hafting techniques across Central and South-Eastern Europe. Major collections are held at the NHM Wien, the Welterbemuseum Hallstatt, and the Ashmolean Museum (187 Hallstatt objects from the Evans collection, including axes). The Heuneburg settlement has also yielded evidence of woodworking activity within the broader Hallstatt cultural sphere.

Gaps and Notes
- Adzes, chisels, gouges, saws, drawknives: Visual references for these specific tool sub-types from Hallstatt-period contexts proved very scarce in online museum databases. These tools are discussed in academic literature (particularly Pleiner 2006, “Iron in Archaeology: Early European Blacksmiths”) but dedicated object photographs accessible online are rare. Researchers requiring images of these tool types should consult the NHM Wien collection directly or access Pleiner’s publication (available on Academia.edu at https://www.academia.edu/34485002/Iron_in_Archaeology_Early_European_Blacksmiths_Pleiner_2006_).
- Iron axes from Hallstatt graves: While the Hallstatt cemetery produced iron axes as grave goods (particularly in the eastern Hallstatt zone as elite markers), individual object photographs from museum databases were not located as discrete online catalogue entries. The NHM Wien’s Early Iron Age collection page confirms their existence but does not provide browsable individual object records.
- Ramsauer watercolours: The original Ramsauer/Engl watercolours documenting Hallstatt grave finds (including tool deposits) are held at the NHM Wien but are not digitised for public access online as individual viewable images. They are reproduced in various academic publications.
