B1: Salt Mining Tools — Visual Reference Collection
Context
Salt mining at Hallstatt spans over 7,000 years, making it the oldest salt mine in the world. The extraordinary preservation conditions created by the salt-rich, anaerobic environment within the mine galleries have yielded an unparalleled corpus of organic mining tools and equipment from the Bronze Age (Ha A-B, c. 1500-800 BC) and Iron Age (Ha C-D, c. 800-450 BC). The primary repository for these finds is the Department of Prehistory at the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (NHM Wien), which has led excavations at Hallstatt since the mid-19th century, with continuous annual campaigns since 1960 under researchers including Hans Reschreiter and the current team. The Salzwelten visitor mine at Hallstatt and the Welterbemuseum Hallstatt also display original and replica material. Key tool types include bronze and iron picks (Lappenpickel), wooden shovels, leather carry sacks (Tragsäcke), wooden troughs (Fülltröge), lighting chips (Leuchtspäne), bast and grass ropes, leather caps, and the famous Bronze Age wooden staircase. The Hallstatt picks are characterised by a beechwood knee-hafting with a clubbed head and a short thick stem tapering in the upper third, mounted with a bronze or iron tip of high-tin alloy (10%+ Sn), making the tips hard but brittle and frequently broken.

Gaps and Notes
- Leather mining caps (Lederkappen): Despite multiple searches, no specific museum photograph or catalogue image of a preserved Hallstatt-period leather mining cap was located as a discrete object page. The NHM Wien mentions “fur caps, leather caps” among the organic finds but does not provide a dedicated image page. This is a known gap.
- Kienspäne / Leuchtspäne torches: The NHM Wien’s research pages confirm these were found in innumerable quantities, but no individual object photograph page was identified. The lighting chips are discussed textually on the NHM Hallstatt website but not showcased as individual museum objects with high-resolution photography.
- Fülltröge (filling troughs): Mentioned in NHM Wien mining methods pages but no dedicated object image page was found.
- Bast and grass ropes: Discussed on the NHM Wien mining facilities page but not featured as individual catalogued objects with photographs.
